Clothes Moths

Overview:

Clothes moths are usually found inside the home tearing up your clothing, carpet, and other materials you use on a daily basis. They can become a real nuisance within your home if you do not know what is causing the damage to those material items. They are about a half an inch in length and are yellowish-tan. There are two different types of clothes moths that invade Middle Tennessee homes; these are the case-making clothes moth and the webbing clothes moth. If you have either of these moths invading your home, the best thing you could do is call the real Nashville Pest Control. They can get rid of those pesky moths for you.

Appearance and Life-cycle:

As stated before, clothes moths are about a half an inch in length, and are yellowish-tan in color. Their larvae are about a half of an inch in length as well, and they are white with black or brown heads. Before feeding on your clothes, they usually will make a silk-like barrier around them, making the holes noticeable after they’ve already created one. The female moth can lay up to 300 eggs in her lifetime. That’s a lot of moths! She lays her eggs, the eggs hatch, and once matured, they become adults.

Their life-cycle and how long it lasts is directly correlated with the environment they live in. Their development is usually better whenever the room is warm and dark with high levels of humidity. Female clothes moths usually die after laying her eggs on the preferred fabric. Her eggs will hatch during the summer months but can take up to three weeks in the winter months.

Habitat and Behavior:

Clothes moths usually prefer darker areas, and are not attracted to lights like most moths. They normally consume wool, silk, fur, or hair. If these moths are not treated for properly, there can be a lot of damage to your clothes, sheets, towels, curtains, etc. But knowing what is destroying your materials is the first step. That’s why you have Nashville Pest Control by your side!

Level of Danger:

Clothes moths are not dangerous to humans, however they are dangerous towards household items. They eat on silk, wool, carpet, clothes, towels, or anything that contains any of those fabric materials. They feed on those materials and ingest it, creating a hold or empty spot on your household items.

Signs of Infestation:

The most obvious sign of a clothes moth infestation, is seeing holes and odd openings in your clothing-like materials.
